As global demand for clean energy grows, environmental awareness strengthens, and nations prioritize carbon reduction goals, energy storage technologies—a critical enabler of energy transition—have garnered unprecedented attention.

Recently, Chinas Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and seven other departments jointly released the High-Quality Development Action Plan for the New Energy Storage Manufacturing Industry(Action Plan), explicitly proposing the moderately forward-looking deployment of ultra-long-duration energy storage technologies such as hydrogen energy storage. The Action Plan marks a critical turning point in the hydrogen energy industry's transition from technological exploration to large-scale application.

I. Policy Context and Objectives

      The Action Plan sets the goal of significantly enhancing the innovation capacity and comprehensive competitiveness of Chinas new energy storage manufacturing industry by 2027,it aims to establish a robust industrial system through high-end, intelligent, and green development pathways, fostering 3-5 ecosystem-leading enterprises Notably. the Action Plan emphasizes the strategic importance of hydrogen energy storage technology and encourages the development of diversified hybrid storage technologies tailored to practical needs. These measures not only reflect the nations commitment to advancing hydrogen innovation but also unlock vast opportunities for enterprises dedicated to this field.

II. Technological Features and Applications  

     Hydrogen energy storage, as a highly efficient energy storage method, excels in long-term, large-scale electricity storage, making it ideal for balancing the intermittency and volatility of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. Through the electricity-to-hydrogen-to-electricity conversion process, it utilizes surplus or low-quality electricity for large-scale hydrogen production and converts stored hydrogen back into electricity, when needed, achieving efficient energy storage and release.In practical applications, hydrogen energy storage enables grid peak shaving, frequency regulation, load balancing, and cross-seasonal energy management, with deployment capabilities spanning transportation, industrial systems, and other critical sectors.

A representative case is the pilot hydrogen energy storage project jointly launched by Xander Hydrogen and Changqing Oilfield in oil extraction operations. The project employs a hydrogen energy storage-based cogeneration integrated energy system, comprising three core subsystems:water electrolysis hydrogen production system,metal-based hydrogen storage system,fuel cell system.

The system ensures stable, long-term operation of both the energy supply infrastructure and oil extraction equipment. Key innovations include:

Highly integrated systems incorporating water electrolysis, fuel cells, and metal - based hydrogen production. into a container-sized unit, ensuring portability for deployment in scenarios such as backup power supply and remote field operations.

Scalable storage capacity with the flexibility to add hydrogen storage tanks based on demand.

Cost-efficient design and a heat recovery and water management system that effectively utilizes waste heat and water generated during power generation, achieving high-efficiency comprehensive energy utilization.

 

III. Future Prospects and Guidance

The success of the Changqing Oilfield project by Xander Hydrogen not only demonstrates the commercial viability of hydrogen energy storage but also charts a development path defined by "technology innovation setting standards"and"scenario-driven ecosystem development". Moving forward, we will continue to advance the technological progress and industrial application of hydrogen energy storage, contributing to the realization of Chinas dual-carbon goals.
